The United Seal of America This United Seal centers around the golden rays of light America's founders included on both sides of the Great Seal of the United States – the emblem they envisioned to express the idea and purpose of their new nation to the world and to the future. Over the head of the American bald eagle, this light is breaking through a cloud surrounding the constellation of 13 stars. In the zenith of an unfinished pyramid on the reverse, rays of light radiate from the eye in a triangle. The constellation represents a new state taking its place and rank among other sovereign powers. The shield's stripes (states) support a chief (Congress) which unites them and depends upon the strength of their union. The motto E Pluribus Unum (Out of many, one) alludes to this union. Reverse Symbolism The pyramid signifies strength and duration. The eye over it and motto Annuit Coeptis (Providence has favored our undertakings) allude to the many signal interpositions of providence in favor of the American cause. Novus Ordo Seclorum (A new order of the ages) signifies the beginning of the new American era, which commenced in 1776 with the Declaration of Independence.
